Essential Reading: Dr. Stacey

As psychologists, we are frequently asked for books that our clients can take home with them, so they can continue the work of therapy between sessions. To begin our essential reading list, here are a few of the workbooks that I refer to again and again in my practice.

The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook, Fifth Edition. Martha Davis, Ph.D.; Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman, MSW; Matthew McKay, Ph.D. ©2000 New Harbinger ISBN 1-57224-214-0. Paperback.

I think everyone, whether in therapy or not, should own a copy of this book. It features simple, step-by-step directions for everything from meditation to rapid relaxation.

Preparing For Surgery/A Mind-Body Approach To Enhance Healing And Recovery. William W. Deardorff, Ph.D.; John L. Reeves II, Ph.D. © 1997 New Harbinger ISBN 1-57224-071-7. Paperback.

This book is not just about preparing for surgery. It also contains useful information about interfacing with physicians and dealing with issues like acute pain. If you or a loved one are about to have a medical procedure, I suggest this as a must-read.

The Courage To Heal/A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. Ellen Bass and Laura Davis. ©1988 Perennial Library ISBN 0-06-096234-8. Paperback.

The Courage To Heal is a guide for women survivors of child sexual abuse. It has information that is useful to the survivors’ loved ones and signifcant others, as well as ways to cope with the reoccurring feelings being a survivor of sexual abuse can bring about.
